휴양지인 줄 알았더니 극기훈련? 보홀 스쿠버 다이빙과 돌고래의 추억
2014년의 치열했던 바다와 2026년의 보홀을 만나다
시간이 참 빠르다는 걸 새삼 느끼게 되는 요즘입니다. 핸드폰 사진첩 깊숙한 곳에서 2014년 5월, 세부 항구(Pier 1)에서 오션젯을 타고 2시간 만에 넘어갔던 보홀 섬의 기억을 다시 꺼내보았어요. 다들 낭만 가득한 바다 구경과 꿀 같은 휴양을 기대하며 떠나는 곳이 바로 보홀이잖아요? 저 역시 아름다운 에메랄드빛 해변에서 여유롭게 모히토 한 잔을 들이켜는 상상을 하며 배에 올랐었죠.
하지만 보홀에 도착하자마자 저를 반겨준 건 픽업 나온 ‘다이빙 교육 기관’의 차량이었습니다. 숙소에 짐을 풀고 아침을 허겁지겁 넘기자마자, 제 눈앞에 펼쳐진 건 로맨틱한 해변이 아니라 숨 막히는 수련원급 스파르타 교육이었답니다.
다이빙 이론 교육을 듣고, 밥 먹고, 또 교육을 듣고… 곧바로 숙소 수영장(제한수역)에 들어가 물의 엄청난 압력을 온몸으로 체감해야 했어요.
고작 10미터 정도 내려갔는데도 수압 때문에 귀가 찢어질 것 같더라고요. 같이 교육을 듣던 공기업 직원 형들과 “우리 이거 극기훈련 온 거 아니냐”며 푸념을 늘어놓곤 했어요. 매일 저녁 밤 8시 반이 되어서야 일정이 끝났고, “시험에 통과 못 하면 자격증은 없다”는 강사님의 으름장에 그 피곤한 몸을 이끌고 문제집을 붙잡은 채 꾸벅꾸벅 졸아야 했답니다.
그렇게 치열했던 수영장 훈련이 끝나고, 다음 날 드디어 진짜 바다(개방수역)로 나가는 아침이 밝았습니다.
배를 타고 먼바다로 나가자 전날의 피로와 서러움이 눈 녹듯 사라졌어요. 수면 위로 은빛 돌고래들이 수십 마리씩 무리 지어 점프하는 ‘돌핀 왓칭’의 장관이 펼쳐졌거든요. 물속에서 그렇게 나를 옥죄던 바다가 밖에서 보니 이렇게 비현실적으로 평화롭고 아름다울 수 있을까요?
물속 수화만으로도 카리스마가 넘치던 열정 가득한 30대 여강사님은 물 밖에서는 그저 다정하고 멋진 분이셨어요. 댕기열을 옮기는 무서운 모기에 물려 3주나 앓아누우신 적도 있다는데, 그런 척박함 속에서도 바다와 다이빙을 향한 그녀의 자부심은 정말 대단해 보였어요.
벽에는 도마뱀이 붙어있고 숙소 주변 풀밭에는 염소들이 뛰어놀던 보홀의 소박한 풍경. 너무 배가 고파 “시장이 반찬”이라며 허겁지겁 퍼먹었던 그 꿀맛 같던 저녁 식사들. 시험의 압박 속에서도 멀리 지는 노을의 색깔이 유난히 곱게 보였던 그 모든 순간들이 이제는 진하게 농축된 추억으로 남았습니다. 스마트폰으로 대충 찍어 화질은 조금 아쉽지만, 눈으로 담았던 2014년 보홀의 맑은 바닷물은 여전히 제 기억 속에서 투명하게 찰랑거립니다.

Where the grueling sea of 2014 meets the Bohol of 2026
It really hits me these days how fast time flies. Deep in my phone’s photo album, I dug up memories of Bohol Island from May 2014, a trip that took a two-hour OceanJet ferry ride from the port of Cebu. Bohol is typically the kind of place you visit expecting a romantic ocean view and a sweet, relaxing getaway, right? I, too, boarded that ferry picturing myself casually sipping a mojito on a pristine, emerald beach.
But as soon as I arrived in Bohol, what greeted me wasn’t a luxury resort, but a pickup van from a scuba diving school. After quickly dropping off my bags and rushing through breakfast, the reality that unfolded before my eyes was far from a romantic beach. Instead, it was an intense, bootcamp-style Spartan training session.
We sat through diving theory classes, grabbed a quick bite, and then it was back to more classes. Soon after, we jumped straight into the resort’s training pool, where I had to experience the immense, crushing pressure of the water firsthand.
Even going down just ten meters felt like my ears were going to burst. I found myself grumbling with the other trainees, asking, “Did we pay to join a military bootcamp or what?” Our daily schedule didn’t end until 8:30 at night. Terrified by our instructor’s warning that there would be no certification if we failed the exam, we had to drag our exhausted bodies to our desks, nodding off while gripping our study guides.
After that grueling pool training, the morning finally came when we headed out to the real, open ocean.
Riding the boat out into the deep sea, all the exhaustion and misery from the previous day melted away instantly. A spectacular scene of ‘dolphin watching’ unfolded right before us, with dozens of silver dolphins leaping in schools above the water’s surface. How could the ocean, which felt so suffocating from the inside, look this surreal, peaceful, and beautiful from the outside?
Our passionate instructor in her thirties, who exuded pure charisma underwater using only hand signals, turned out to be incredibly warm and wonderful on land. She once suffered from dengue fever transmitted by mosquitoes, but even in such a harsh environment, her pride in the ocean and in diving was truly remarkable to witness.
The rustic charm of Bohol, with geckos clinging to the walls and goats roaming the grass around our resort. Those incredibly delicious dinners we devoured out of sheer hunger, proving that hunger truly is the best sauce. Even under the immense pressure of the looming exam, the colors of the distant sunset looked exceptionally stunning. All of these fleeting moments have now crystallized into a rich, unforgettable memory. Though the low-res smartphone photos leave a bit to be desired, the crystal-clear waters of Bohol from 2014 are still rippling vividly in my mind.
