더위가 본격적으로 시작되니 어디 시원한 데가 없을까 싶더라고요. 멀리 휴가 가긴 부담스럽고, 그렇다고 집에만 있기엔 답답한 그런 날. 가까운 계곡 한번 찾아보자 싶어서 나섰습니다.
목적지는 안양에 있는 삼막사 계곡. 정확히는 삼막천이라고 부르더라고요. 경기도 안양시 만안구 석수동, 삼성산 자락에서 흘러내리는 물줄기예요. 경인교대 경기캠퍼 바로 옆이 입구라 길 찾기는 어렵지 않았어요.
입구 주변엔 ‘삼막사 맛거리촌’이라고 해서 쌈밥집이며 백숙집이 줄지어 있더라고요. 카페도 꽤 보이고요. 일단 자리부터 잡고, 먹을 건 그다음에 생각하기로 했습니다.
조금 걸어 들어가니 물 세 갈래가 만나는 지점이 나왔어요. 하류 쪽엔 이미 자리를 차지하고 있는 분들이 많더라고요. 좀 더 한적한 자리를 찾고 싶어서 위쪽으로 한참을 올라가봤습니다.
가만히 보고 있어도 더위가 가시는 기분이었어요. ”
올라가는 길은 진짜 좋았어요. 화강암 바위가 평평하게 깔린 암반 지대라 걷기도 편했고, 작은 물고기들이 떼 지어 다니는 게 그대로 보이더라고요.
근데 한참 올라오다 보니까 좀 이상했습니다. 물이 점점 줄어드는 거예요. 그러다 결국 상류 쪽엔 물이 거의 없는 수준까지 말라있었어요. 비가 너무 안 와서 그런 모양이었어요.
찾아보니 삼막사 계곡이 삼성산 자락 암반 지대 특성상, 가뭄이면 상류부터 빠르게 바닥이 드러난다고 하더라고요. 원래는 등산로까지 물이 쭉 이어지는데, 이날은 그냥 마른 바위만 펼쳐져 있었습니다.

매미 소리랑 가끔 부는 바람 소리만 들렸어요. ”
그래도 의외로 나쁘진 않았어요. 위쪽엔 정말 아무도 없었거든요. 참고로 이 계곡을 따라 2.5km쯤 더 올라가면 삼막사라는 절이 나옵니다. 통일신라 677년에 원효대사, 의상대사, 윤필거사 세 고승이 띠집(막)을 짓고 수도했다고 해서 ‘삼막’이라는 이름이 붙었다고 해요. 이번엔 절까지 못 올라갔는데, 좀 선선해지면 등산 겸 코스로 한번 잡아봐도 좋겠다 싶더라고요.

• 물속이 다 들여다보일 정도로 맑아서 작은 물고기들이 떼 지어 다니는 게 그대로 보였어요. 가만히 보고 있어도 더위가 가시더라고요.
• 비가 안 와서 상류가 다 말라있었는데, 그 덕분에 위쪽엔 사람이 아무도 없었어요. 한적함을 넘어선 적막한 수준이었습니다. 매미 소리랑 바람 소리만 들리는데, 의외로 그 분위기가 좋더라고요.
• 계곡은 비 온 직후가 진짜인 것 같아요. 다음엔 물 콸콸 흐를 때 한번 더 와봐야겠다 싶었어요.

오늘의 경로
As the summer heat began to settle in, I found myself craving somewhere cool. A long vacation felt like too much, but staying home felt a little suffocating, so I decided to look for a nearby valley and headed to Sammaksa Valley in Anyang.
The stream is officially called Sammakcheon. It flows down from the slopes of Samsung Mountain, in Seoksu-dong, Manan-gu, Anyang. The entrance is right next to the Gyeongin National University of Education’s Gyeonggi Campus, so it was easy to find.
Around the entrance, there was a small food street called Sammaksa Food Street, lined with restaurants serving ssambap, Korean chicken soup, and a few cafés. I decided to find a spot near the water first and think about food later.
After walking in for a bit, I reached a place where three streams seemed to meet. The lower part of the valley was already filled with people who had settled in for the day. I wanted somewhere quieter, so I kept walking upstream.
The path itself was beautiful. Flat granite rocks spread across the streambed, making it easy to walk, and the water was so clear that I could see tiny fish moving in groups beneath the surface. Just watching the water made the heat feel a little lighter.
But after a while, something felt strange. The farther I went, the less water there was. Eventually, near the upper part of the stream, the water had almost completely dried up. I later found out that because this valley is formed around a rocky streambed, the upper sections can dry out quickly during a drought. Usually, the water continues farther up toward the hiking trail, but that day, all I could see were wide stretches of dry rock.
At first, I was a little disappointed. But in a strange way, it wasn’t bad at all. There was no one else up there. It was quiet beyond expectation. The trees formed a tunnel overhead, keeping the air surprisingly cool, and the only sounds were cicadas, leaves, and the occasional breeze passing through.
I didn’t get the refreshing valley water I had imagined. But instead, I found a different kind of coolness — the shade of the trees, the stillness of the mountain, and a quiet moment that felt completely separate from the heat of the city.
