I boarded the JR Karatsu Line at Saga Station. As the two-car diesel train rattled to life, the low rooftops of Saga’s city center slid past the window. I later found out that trains run only once an hour on this line — miss one, and you’re in for quite a wait.

Once we left the city behind, the scenery shifted completely. Convenience stores and restaurant signs faded away one by one, replaced by rice paddies and houses with low-slung roofs. The further we got toward Ogi, the fewer passengers remained on board.

The first thing I noticed stepping off at Ogi Station was the silence. No taxis out front, no announcement echoing through the platform — just the steady clatter of my suitcase wheels against the pavement. It felt almost like an unmanned station.

Walking toward the accommodation, I passed through the shopping street. Most of the stores had already pulled down their shutters, even though it wasn’t quite seven in the evening. I later learned that Ogi is known as the “City of Yokan” — a traditional Japanese sweet made from red bean paste and agar. Apparently, well-known confectionery shops like the Muraoka Sōhonten line the street, but arriving after dark, all I could make out were the faded shop names painted above the shutters.

I walked slowly along the shuttered storefronts. Barely any cars passed by, and the only sound was the faint hum of a vending machine in the distance. Amber streetlights stood scattered along the road — nothing like the neon glow of Tokyo or Osaka. Just the most basic kind of light, there simply to illuminate the way.

From somewhere in the neighborhood, the sound of a television drifted out. Someone having dinner, perhaps. It struck me that this wasn’t a place tourists were supposed to visit — I was just passing through a neighborhood where people actually lived their lives.

To be honest, I felt a bit thrown off. It was the first time on a trip that I had absolutely nothing to do for the evening. Usually, I pack every hour with plans — where to go, what to see, where to take photos. But in Ogi at night, there was simply nothing asking for my attention.

So instead, I grabbed a can of beer from a convenience store and started walking again. No destination, no direction in mind. I strolled past a house with laundry hanging over a low wall and paused in front of an old barbershop sign. Crickets hummed in my ears, and strangely enough, it felt comforting.

I didn’t discover what Ogi looks like during the day until the following morning. Apparently, there’s a well-known waterfall called Kiyomizu Falls nearby, and Ogi Park is home to three thousand cherry trees that bloom all at once in spring. Had I come in spring or autumn, it would have been an entirely different trip.

But that midsummer night — wandering through the quiet of a shuttered shopping street with no plan at all — was something altogether different from cherry blossoms or waterfalls. It certainly wasn’t a glamorous trip, but in the city, there’s always this unspoken pressure to be consuming something. Here, it was perfectly fine to do nothing at all.

Maybe, every now and then, we all need an evening just like this one.
