Amalfi Coast Transport: Sorrento to Positano SITA Bus Guide (2026)

Riding the SITA Bus along the Cliffs
of the Sparkling Amalfi Coast

If you’re planning a trip to Southern Italy, getting around the Amalfi Coast by public transport is one of the trickier parts to figure out. When I traveled from Zurich through Interlaken down to the coast, this was the leg I spent the most time researching.

Here’s what I learned firsthand — a practical 2026 guide to taking the SITA bus from Sorrento to Positano.

Buying SITA Bus Tickets

One important thing to know: you cannot buy tickets from the driver on board. Tickets must be purchased in advance, either at a physical location or through a mobile app.

Where to Buy
At the ticket booth near Sorrento Circumvesuviana station, or at any Tabaccheria (look for the large “T” sign).

Ticket Fares (2026)
One-way (AC2 zone): €2.60 / 24-hour unlimited pass (COSTIERASITA): €10.00

Mobile App
You can also purchase tickets through the Unico Campania app. It generates a QR code you scan when boarding — useful if the ticket booth has a long queue.

Validate Your Ticket
If you bought a paper ticket, remember to stamp it in the validation machine on board as soon as you get on. Unstamped tickets are treated as invalid during inspections. (Mobile QR tickets don’t need this step.)

Frequency & Duration
Buses run roughly every 30–60 minutes (less frequent on Sundays and holidays). The ride from Sorrento to Positano takes about 40–50 minutes, depending on traffic.

Motion Sickness & The Right Side Rule

The SS163 road from Sorrento to Positano winds tightly along the cliffs. Even people who aren’t usually prone to motion sickness may feel uneasy. Consider taking motion sickness medication before boarding.

If you can choose your seat, sit on the right side (facing forward) by the window. The left side mostly faces rock walls, while the right side opens up to a wide view of the coastline and the sea.

An Alternative: Boat Along the Coast

If the winding bus ride isn’t for you, there are boat tours that follow the same coastline from the water. This one departs from Sorrento and stops at both Amalfi and Positano over about 8 hours.

Where to Get Off in Positano

Positano is built vertically on a cliff, so choosing the right stop matters — especially if you’re carrying luggage. The SITA bus makes two stops in the town:

Chiesa Nuova
Upper part of the town. A good choice if your accommodation is uphill, or if you’d like to walk downhill through the village.

Sponda
Closer to the beach and the main commercial area. More convenient for day-trippers.

Another Option: Full-Day Boat Tour from Naples

If you’d rather skip the bus logistics altogether, this boat tour departs from Naples and covers Amalfi, Positano, and Ravello in a single day trip (about 10 hours).

With tickets sorted, a seat on the right side, and the right stop in mind, the bus ride along the Amalfi Coast can turn out to be one of the more memorable parts of the trip.

I also drew a short comic about this bus ride — the views, the nerves, and that first glimpse of Positano.
